| What they've produced isn't the usual soundtrack music, that's inobtrusive by design and feels incomplete alone. Instead, these acoustic songs with their quiet charm and slow lilt need nothing else. There's not only potential variety in the instrumentation (cello, two guitars, accordion and female vocals) but the line-up provides a solid balance between rhythmic propulsion and melodic calm, at times reminiscent of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. So music that could have been merely pretty, displays a tougher side where a bittersweet temper pushes against the hypnotic melodies. It's almost like the band was whispering secrets too important to be spoken aloud. That feeling is furthered when singer Teresa Salgueiro doesn't clip off her syllables but lets the words rise from the barely audible and then fall back. Though you can hear everything, there's still a sense of mystery that infuses the entire album. Ainda is a real stunner, worldly but aiming for the stars. Lang Thompson in Funhouse, 1996 |
